Jeff Horton in the house for the Book Blogger Fair today...

Business first: We're having a reader's choice contest during this Fair, so be sure to place your votes here: http://shutupandreadgroup.blogspot.com/2013/07/readers-choice-awards.html

My book, The Spi-Corp Series, Book 1 - A First Love Never Dies is in the Science Fiction - Mature Category down toward the bottom of the page and it would sure appreciate some love!
Now, to the fun stuff...

The camera opens on a newsroom and sitting behind a desk is Laytak Draza, a very handsome Borgla from the planet Yerod. He is tall, with broad shoulders, a barrel of a chest and his long arms are folded on the desk. His face is a muted grey with high cheekbones and a strong, defined chin. He has no hair but the ridges that begin at his hairline, could almost be braids. His brilliant red eyes glow with underlying knowledge and his full lips split into a grin as he speaks...

Good Morning and welcome to the Galactic News Network. I'm Laytak Draza. On today's show we're speaking with Amena Wharry, Captain of The Patrick Henry.

Welcome. Why don't we start by with who you are, tell my audience a little about yourself...

My people are called Entelli, and we are a race of sentient, living computers. Unfortunately, human beings cannot pronounce my true name, but you may call me Ignis. I was recovered from a Valhari ship that crashed near Roswell, New Mexico in the year 1947. When I was finally revived nearly seventy years later, I discovered that a scientist named Kate Summers, the same human who reactivated me, had named me Ignis. I believe that means "ignition" in one the many languages you speak here on Earth. You may address me by that name.

Interesting. And what's your current mission...

I had been linked via a neural interface with the man who would become Kate's husband, a man named Nick Reynolds. He so impressed me that I took a great interest in humanity, lending my support to aid in humanity's emergence into the greater galactic community. I left Nick a little "gift" before I left Earth, an ability that later enabled you humans to build your first interstellar spacecraft. Nick wrote about what followed in a book he entitled, "Frontiers, I highly recommend it.

Anyway, sometime later, when I learned you Earth had built its first fleet of interstellar ships, and that you had finally set out to establish your first colony on another world (Nick's son wrote about this in a book he entitled, "New Beginnings," I decided I wanted to be a part of it. I transferred from another Valhari ship to one of the Earth Space Alliance ships that will be transferred to the colony on New Eden. Much of this was documented in the two books I mentioned, Frontiers and New Beginnings, manuscripts that document Frontier, the first interstellar ship, and the new Earth Space Program.

*Laytak looks at the camera.* How quaint. So, you’re a sentient computer who is currently inhabiting a space ship?

Correct, although not all Entelli choose to serve on interstellar ships, as I do. I happen to enjoy the exciting interaction with alien species, and I want to see as much of the universe as I can. I serve many functions aboard the ship, but I primarily act as the ship's navigational computer, I bridge the gap between machine and the sentient beings piloting the ship.

Very Interesting. And have you enjoyed helping humans?

Human beings are a remarkable life form; the Valhari have always thought so as well. Human beings are full of passion, curiosity, and an insatiable to learn. They are also capable of incredible acts of kindness as well as barbaric, unspeakable acts. The way you balance these various qualities is truly quite astonishing.

And what do you think of Earth?

Well, since I have no biological eyes, I've experienced it only seen it directly through the ships scanners, and the numerous images in the ship's database, since we Entelli have no eyes, as you humans do. It's a beautiful planet, and I've seen quite a few so I'm extremely qualified to say so.

Enlightening. And do you wish to return to your home world? When your mission is complete?

Absolutely, as much as I enjoy meeting new species and experiencing the wonders of the universe, after a while I miss my own people. We communicate with one another through a global network of sorts.

Well then, what are your plans?

Humanity is a most promising and exciting new species, the most recent to join the League of Sentient Beings. I plan to offer my services to their new fleet of ships as often as I possibly can.
Well, thank you for your time Ingis... I am quite sure we will be hearing more of your adventures soon enough.

Thank you very much for having me, Laytak, you quite an exceptional person, for a Borgla!

*Laytak turns back to the camera.* If you would like to know more about Ingis, you can find him here

Excerpt:

“Nick, wake-up! They’re here! Nick, wake up!” Kate was frantically yelling at him when he opened his eyes. He quickly took off the helmet, stood up, and backed away from Ignis.

“Hi, Kate!” Nick said to her, before pulling her close, embracing and kissing her once more. Kate took a step back and smacked him on the arm.

“Don’t you ever scare me like that again, Nick Reynolds! I had no idea whether you were going to come out of it in time, or whether you’d end up going back with Ignis!”

Nick suddenly became aware that the building all around him was shaking.

“What’s going on?” he asked. Kate walked over to the window and pointed up.

“Just take a look. It looks like Ignis’ friends from out of town have come to take him back home after sixty-five years,” she said, smiling, happy to have Nick back. She jumped back into his arms once more before standing next to him with her arm around his waist, alternately looking out the window and back at Ignis.

“Wow,” was all Nick said, as he watched the huge alien spacecraft stop when it arrived over their location at S-4. It was beautiful, a circular, saucer-shaped craft. It had considerably more detail than anything he’d ever seen before. There were numerous, square shaped portals all around the craft, and there was a center ring underneath, which rotated in the opposite direction from the larger outer ring. The immense craft from another world filled the sky above them.

"Okay, so I wonder what happens next?” asked Kate. “Will they send a ship down to collect Ignis?”

Nick shook his head. “I don’t think so,” he answered. “Somehow, I don’t think they’ll need to.” They were watching Ignis when suddenly a bright blue light materialized all around the lab table. The light grew brighter and brighter until a moment later, a brilliant white light appeared in the midst of the blue one. When both lights suddenly disappeared, the Ignis device had disappeared. Moments later, the rattling stopped. When they looked out the window, they found that the ship had already vanished."

Jeff has also been kind enough to host a giveaway during his stop today. Simply comment below answering the question, what would you say to a sentient computer if you could and be eligible to win a copy of either The Dark Age, The Last Prophet, The Way of Nacor or Cybersp@ace, winner's choice.

Thanks as always for stopping by today.

Until next time.

Good Morning and welcome to the Galactic News Network. I'm Laytak Draza. On today's show we're speaking with Amena Wharry, Captain of The Patrick Henry.

Welcome. Why don't we start by with who you are, tell my audience a little about yourself...

Hi, thanks for having me! I’m Amena. I explore. Well, I do more than that. You see, I lead this small team, and we travel to these other planets—turns out these other planets are all other Earths, at least the inhabited ones are. We stop by, see what’s there, and if there’s a day to save, we save it. I admit, at first, I was really disappointed that we didn’t find any actual alien life, like alien-alien, bug-eyed little green men and all that. But this is pretty cool, too. It’s like journeying to alternate realities, only without punching holes in the space-time continuum. As for my background, I used to be a sheriff’s deputy, all about serving and protecting. Yep, that’d be me.

Interesting. And what's your current mission...

We’re between missions right now. Our ship needs some repairs from our last outing. We went to this Earth that was at the end of its life. It was about to explode, and this crazy woman tried to trap us on there so we’d die with it. She was really crazy. So yeah, escape from a dying planet. That sure was something. As for our next mission, we’ll pick a planet off our list, hop over there, and see what’s what.

*Laytak looks at the camera.* How quaint. So, you’ve been tasked with evaluating these other Earths for threats. What gives you the right to judge an entire planet as a threat though…

No, no, no. We don’t judge entire planets as all good or all bad, and we’re not out to nuke anybody. But if we come across some interplanetary Napoleon looking to add us to his empire, his life is going to get tons more difficult, courtesy of us. And me personally, I don’t want to find threats. I just want to meet cool new people doing cool new things—new to me, of course. But the unfortunate reality is that some people aren’t as wonderful as I might like them to be. So we keep an eye out for that sort, and we sort them out.

Very Interesting. So, as a once small-town Sheriff, you feel you have that ability?

Bad guys are bad guys, no matter where they are, and they give you all these helpful hints about their badness. Like, for example, if they’re trying to kill or conquer you, then there’s a very high probability you’ve come across a bad guy. But no, I can’t save worlds single-handedly. As fantastical as it would be to be Superwoman, I can’t do it all by myself. I got my people.

Oh, so you rely on your team as well. Why don’t you tell us about them?

I’d be delighted to! There’s my dear friend Kaden. We worked together in the sheriff’s office, and we’ve been best friends since we were like >this< big. He’s this big-time martial arts expert. He even owns his own school, and he’s taught so many people how to defend themselves. He backs me up as our group’s moral compass.

Then there’s Sela, who’s this super-genius. She invented our spaceship, this octahedron that can bounce across the universe. She creates the most amazing things. She even cobbled together a shrink ray recently. Unfortunately, I missed it when she shrank Ballard…

Oh, Ballard, he’s, well, he means well. He’s a former Navy SEAL. I’m not at liberty to discuss what happened there, but he’s very skilled, and, uh, maybe a little paranoid, and, yeah…moving on!

Mariana. She’s great. She’s a brilliant detective. She spots the things that 99.99999 percent of people will never see. And you will never meet a more honest person. Really. It’s no contest.

Gilmore holds our octahedron together. He’s a former NASA engineer, and—hopefully he’ll never hear I said this—but he’s a genius when it comes to anything mechanical. He knows it, too, regrettably, but he’s a good guy.

And then there’s Jem. She’s an acrobat, gymnast. Competed in the Olympics and got the gold, and, uh, yeah, she’s got a lot of potential. Kind of young, but potential, definitely…

And Whit funds the whole thing. That’s Dr. Whit Banville. You know him as the guy who cured the common cold. Once you do that, you can pretty much do whatever you want, and he wanted to check out the stars. So he recruited all of us, and here we are, hopping from Earth to Earth. It’s a fun life.

Enlightening. Now, tell us about the planets you’ve helped.

We’re just getting started. First one, we met these narcissists from another Earth. They were posing as Roman gods, which is kind of interesting how we share some of the same mythology with these other worlds. But yeah, they took their tech to a younger Earth with a less developed civilization, and they decided to rule and coddle everyone, which I thought was kind of rude. We had a little something to say about that.

The next Earth we visited was the one that was, um, blowing up. Sadly, that Earth was beyond anyone’s help.

And finally, I read somewhere you consider yourself an exemplary marksman. Why do you say that?

Because I never miss a shot. I don’t like to brag about it, but I really just don’t miss. Doesn’t matter if it’s a laser gun, old-fashioned gun, or my trusty bow and arrows—I do love my bow and arrows, especially the special arrows Sela cooked up for me. Mariana once asked me how I compensate for the different weights of my grenade arrows, my acid arrows, and so on, and I was just like, well, how could I not compensate? It’s all very intuitive with me. I just know how to shoot.

Well, thank you for your time Ms. Wharry.. I am quite sure we will be hearing more of your adventures soon enough.

*Laytak turns back to the camera.* If you would like to know more about The Prince Henry and his crew, you can find him here

Excerpt:

This space was larger but stuffier. The lights were dimmer, and the folks were quieter. Just as many people sat at the long wooden tables, devouring that same pasty food. Yet no one said a word. All Amena and Kaden could hear was their chewing and slobbering.

“Hey!” Amena said. “We’re strangers, so maybe you can kick us out, show us the door? Kick us out the door?” She informed Kaden, “They don’t like strangers, really don’t.”

No one even glanced at them.

“Okay, the last ones didn’t like strangers,” Amena added. “I promise.”

Kaden approached the nearest table. Several men and women sat in a row, chomping away. They stared down into their food, oblivious to their neighbors.

“Excuse us, sir,” Kaden said. “Ma’am? Hello?”

Amena extended a finger to poke one guy in the head and neck, several times. She gently knocked on his head. She even pulled out an arrow and waved the sharp tip in front of his eyes. He apparently had no reflexes whatsoever.

Obnoxious static filled their earpieces, followed by a haughty voice. “Welcome to your new accommodations.” They recognized it as Ceres’. “You’ll be here a long time.”

“What have you done to these people?” Kaden asked. “And why?”

“You have something in common with them. They, too, challenged our divine authority.”

Amena rolled her eyes. “Excuse us, Fakey McFakerson, you seem to have missed the wee little fact that you never fooled us for a second.”

“In the context of this world, we are divine,” Ceres said. “We’ve eradicated war, famine, and pestilence. What have you accomplished?”

Kaden waved his hand at the face of a non-responsive woman. “That’s not all you’ve eradicated.”

“What you’re looking at represents a fraction of a percentage of the global population. Elsewhere, more than one-hundred-million men, women, and children are content, with all their basic needs attended to. A couple thousand dissidents is a small price to pay.”

“One-hundred-million people,” Kaden said, “all depending on, what, the three of you and your technology? Must be nice to feel needed.”

“The people before you have been injected with microscopic machines that suppress their higher brain functions and render them generally more malleable,” Ceres said. “Here is what will happen. You will beg us to give you the same treatment.”

Amena chuckled. “Fascinating theory you’ve got there. How’d you come up with it?”

Ceres said, “Past experience.”

The brainwashed people rose from their tables, and each one turned to Amena and Kaden.

L. Blankenship At The Blogger Book Fair Today...

First off, I'd like to welcome you all to the Opening Day of the Blogger Book Fair.

I decided that I would give each of my Author's a chance to do a CNN type interview with a character for this event and they all loved it.

So, to get us going, allow me to set the scene for you....

On today's show we're speaking with Prince Kiefan Weissberg of Wodenberg.

Welcome your Highness. Why don't we start by with who you are, tell my audience a little about yourself...

I am Kiefan Weissberg, prince and heir to the crown of Wodenberg. As such, I'm a disciple of Saint Woden and... (shrugs) I earned rank as one of the best knights in the kingdom, at this autumn's joust.

Interesting. And what's your current mission...

I am currently charged with overseeing the defense of our capital and its evacuation while my father engages the enemy at our southern border. It's all but certain that the Empire will press to lay siege as soon after the spring equinox as they may. We hope to hold them off until our allies bring reinforcements. All summer, if need be.

*Laytak looks at the camera.* How quaint. So, I understand your betrothal didn't quite go as intended. Tell us more...

(A slight frown) My betrothal will proceed, so long as our allies come to our aid as promised. Whatever state our land is in, if our saints still live I will be married before Winter Solstice. They have given their word, and I will do as they ask. (His voice lowers) I hope we may have a peaceful marriage, despite all of this.

Very Interesting. So, you are now in love with Kate? Am I hearing that correctly?

(His uncertainty drops into a hard stare. Laytek smiles blandly, waiting for a response through several seconds of silence.) Kate is my physician and a dear friend. And married to another man.

I see. So, now you are waiting on a massive army to invade?

(His stare eases. He shifts in his chair, uncomfortable.) Arcea is gathering twice the army we have, yes.

And how does Wodenberg plan to defend itself. From my information, you are severely lacking in resources, am I right?

True, we have only one Elect, where Arcea has dozens, and ours is a healer. Perhaps our army is small, but our men are fierce in the field and loyal to our saints. There is hope that the hardships of war will create new Elect in Wodenberg. We have stripped the southern kingdom of supplies and people, so that the enemy will find no easy pickings and no innocents to kill. This will be a hard spring, but... (nods to himself)

Well then, what are your plans?

I will defend my people and my saints... (pauses a moment) all that I love, to my last breath.

Well, thank you for your time your Highness. I am quite sure we will be hearing more of your adventures soon enough.

*Laytak turns back to the camera.* If you would like to know more about the good Prince, you can find him here

Welcome to the Hot Summer Romance Blog Hop...

Hello to those stopping by my little corner of the Universe...

I thought for this hop, I'd do a little bit of a sneak peek into Book 2 - Saving His Love of the Spi-Corp Series.

This book has been delayed for several weeks and when you read the scene below, I think you'll be able to figure out why. It seems we've had some technical issues, some health issues and maybe my Muse decided it was time for a vacation, I don't know. I'm hoping he gets back soon though, I'd really like to get this into the hands of my readers, don't cha know!

Anywho, I'm not going to set this up, but I do hope you enjoy it.

----------------

Two days later and the first real sign that anything was wrong on the station came in the form of MACC’s inability to operate the lifts. He was one of the first stranded between decks four and five and he looked up at the ceiling the moment it jerked to an unexpected halt. He was on his way to medical, intent on resuming his vigil at Janel’s side. “MACC? What’s wrong?”
The computer’s throat cleared. “Nothing. Why?”
Jake couldn’t quite wrap his mind around the fact that he was talking to a machine but did his best. “I’m stuck. The lift just stopped.”
“Oh, I apologize.”
The small cube started up again without further comment but it was strange enough to detour from medical and seek out EJ. He found the Princess on the bridge and firmly in the middle of a very real crisis.
“Are you serious?” she bellowed at no one in particular. She strode to a console red hair flying behind her and punched angrily at the keys. “What in the all fires of Mutar Prime is happening to my station?!”
“We have fires on decks 12, 15, 22 and 25. Crew trapped in lifts everywhere, and deck eight just had a blow out,” someone replied.
“Are you serious!”
He stood in the back of the room and eyed Cresta as the Prince appeared in a puff of sulfur smoke much as EJ had a couple of days ago. It surprised him and he wanted to know how they could travel like that, but kept his questions for later.
“What is wrong?” Cresta inquired.
“I think the station may have gone insane,” Jake said, providing the best guess he had.
Starra?”
“Yes, starra,” EJ shouted over her shoulder. “It’s spreading through MACC’s systems like wildfire!”
“How is that possible? It’s a machine, isn’t it?”
EJ snorted. “Multi-Accentuated Conscious Components,” she explained on a snarl. “MACC.”
He cut a look up at the Prince, who shrugged and pointed at his sister. “She likes to meddle.”
“So, he’s sentient?”
Cresta laughed. “More or less. His components are biologically enhanced.” He waved a hand to encompass the bridge. “I do not understand it myself, but the station is more or less metal wrapped around an organic brain.”
EJ’s hands flew over one of the consoles. “And right now that brain is going psycho on us! Where is this counter-agent?”
Cresta’s lips hardened into a line. “How should I know?”
“Well, find out dammit! Before this place implodes and kills us all…”

-----------------

So, as you can see, it's not my fault. I blame starra and MACC and EJ's propensity to meddle!

That's my story, and I'm sticking to it, *nods*!

But, with that said, in all seriousness, I'm hoping to get this out by the weekend. I do hope you enjoyed your stop here and will continue along the hop to all the other wonderful Authors and Bloggers that are participating.

Oh, and for my contest, hit up the Rafflecopter below. I promise, it's nothing too strenuous...:D

Exploring The Universe, One Book At A Time...

First off, if you've made it this far down the list of wonderful Independent Authors from the Lady Amber Reviews Blog Hop, thank you for coming!

I hope you've enjoyed yourself thus far and I hope you'll stay for a moment and visit with me too.

So, I kind of came into this Hop late and I wasn't sure what I wanted to do, but it came to me that maybe you might like to know just how this whole adventure that is the Spi-Corp Series got started...

Well, I'll tell you...

Back in 2007 I was on my typical two week Christmas Vacation and I had CNN going in the background. My ear happened to catch this line during the opening of a special report they were doing.

The reporter said: Do you know how many women between the ages of 18 and 30 go missing every year in the U.S. and are never heard from again?

Well, of course I didn’t, but it did catch my interest and caused the following “What If” to pop into my brain.

Well, what if they are never heard from again because they’ve been kidnapped by Aliens and sold into the Flesh Markets of Outer Space?

AH HA! The next thing I know, its three days later and the first draft of A First Love Never Dies has been completed…

Sadly, though, this was only the beginning and it was very rough because I had nothing else to work with. Meaning that while the story itself came out wonderfully, there were a TON and I mean a T-O-N of planet sized holes in it because I didn’t have the foundation of the Universe in place. Fast forward to 2013 and I’ve spent the last 6 years creating that universe – in the background – along with the 17 books in the series. Now, not all of them are complete, but most of them are and those that aren’t are plotted and just waiting for me to get to them. (I'm lookin' at you Book 15, 16 & 17...*grins*)

Anyway, I finally decided this year that it was time to share my Universe with the Blue Marble we call home. Since then I've released Book 1 - A First Love Never Dies and Book 2 - Saving His Love is slated for release July 8.

I have had a blast writing this series and I hope you'll come along for the ride. If you do, you'll meet all sorts of fun, fascinating Characters, Aliens and Bad Guys, Oh My!

So, jump in the co-pilot's seat over there, grab onto something and let's explore, shall we?

Don't forget to enter the rafflecopter below and then click along to the next Author in the Hop!

Thanks as always for stopping by.

Until next time.

So pleased to host today...

A very good friend of mine, Destiny Ford!

I must say, I've read The Devil Drinks Coffee and it's absolutely awesome! It's also on sale, July 1-3 for .99 so grab up your copy today. It's well worth the ninety-nine pennies, trust me!

Synopsis

A cow suicide, a revolving door rescue, and the birth of a bright purple pig are starting to make Kate Saxee wonder if taking a job in her small hometown of Branson Falls, Utah, was such a great idea. As The Branson Tribune editor, Kate covers local news, which, more often than not, involves her accident-prone mom. Nothing truly newsworthy has ever happened in the quiet town until local teen Chelsea Bradford turns up dead in a Branson Falls lake.

The police rule Chelsea’s death an accident, but Kate suspects there’s more to the story—and she’s not the only one. Two of Branson’s most eligible bachelors are determined to help her solve the crime—among other things. But the small town social network is faster than Twitter, and gossip about Kate’s love-life is quickly branding her the Branson Falls hussy.

As Kate learns more about Chelsea, she discovers that plenty of people are trying to cover up the real story behind the girl’s death—including Chelsea’s parents. Now Kate has to juggle work, men, her mom’s most recent disaster involving a low-speed John Deere Combine chase on the freeway, and fend off the Mormons heaven-bent on saving her soul—all while solving Chelsea’s murder. Dealing with this is going to require a lot of coffee, chocolate frosted donuts, Neil Diamond’s greatest hits, and a slew of words not on the town approved imitation swear list.

As a child, Angela Corbett’s most prized possession was a set of read-along books. She used to follow along with the narrator on the stereo and dream of when she would be able to read by herself. Her childhood reading habit led her to consider her future career. However, after consulting with her parents, she realized she had already exceeded hobbit height and since fairies and dragonslayers were tricky jobs to get, she decided she wanted to create worlds of her own. She started writing poetry in elementary school and worked as a journalist in high school and college, but could never leave her love for writing fiction behind.

She is a graduate of Westminster College where she double majored in communication and sociology. She has worked as a journalist, freelance writer, and director of communications and marketing. She loves classic cars, traveling, and escaping in a good book. She lives in Utah with her incredibly supportive husband and their five-pound Pomeranian, Pippin, whose following of fangirls could rival Justin Bieber’s.

Eternal Starling is her debut novel and the first book in the Emblem of Eternity trilogy.

The Devil Drinks Coffee by Destiny Ford is on SALE for 0.99 on Amazon from July 1-3.
